We know that regular car maintenance and servicing can keep your car running smoothly and keep unexpected repair costs to a minimum; this is the same for house maintenance from the outside paint work to cleaning your oven or dishwasher regularly. The most important thing to take care of is yourself. East healthily, don’t smoke, drink in moderation, exercise and you will keep bad health at bay.

Care of your hot tub

Any type of equipment you have and use on a regular basis needs looking after to ensure you get the most from it. Your hot tub is no exception.

Keep it clean

Probably the best time to give your hot tub a complete clean is when you changing the water which we’d suggest you do once a month when the spa is being used regularly. You could use a mild solution of chlorine and water with a soft cloth or a proprietary non-abrasion cleaner.

A rim of greasy dirt can accumulate around the edge at the surface. There are pastes available to gently remove this or try a using bicarbonate of soda mixed with a little water.

For removing debris in between big cleans, invest in a vacuum designed for hot tubs such as one with a retractable telescopic pole which can get into all difficult corners. You don’t need to empty the tub to use it either.

Cleaning and changing filters

Regularly clean the filters; we’d recommend every month. You can use a product especially for this purpose and hose your filters thoroughly getting between their pleats.

Check your manual to see how often replacement is recommended; this is usually between one and three years.

Don’t forget the cover

Hose it down to get rid of any dirt and use a mild detergent and sponge to clean the top. Clean the underside with water only and dry off thoroughly.

Fresh water and sanitising

How often does the water need changing? Well providing you are using sanitisers which help with this problem, probably about once a month. Drain the old water and as we mentioned above, give your tub a good clean. You might want to add a ‘keep clean’ product when you refill. This could be a chlorine or a bromine sanitiser. Both kill bacteria, algae and other impurities in the water. It is important to follow instructions for the amount you use in ratio with the water. Too much could irritate your skin or eyes and even your lungs.

Water balance

The ph balance of your water is important. You can use Hot Tub Test Strips to check these levels regularly. Check your manual for more details. If you live in a hard water area, the calcium in the water is likely to be high – too much can make the water cloudy and the filters and heater could
build up scale.

Alkali levels: this depends on the water in your area too. If Alkali levels are too low, corrosion and damage to the hot tub are likely.

All this love and care is worth it so that you lessen the need for hot tub repairs any time soon.
